What sets this kimono apart is its vibrant colour dyed with natural ingredients from the region! Zero chemicals were used in the production process, making this garment not only gentle on your skin but also environmentally friendly.
During our visit to Guatemala, we were intrigued to learn how these kimonos are put together, and how these ladies create the vibrant coloured textiles using solely natural methods. Filled with excitement about the process, we have decided to share it with you.
Step into the captivating process of creating these remarkable kimonos:
Step 1
Sustainably sourced cotton, linen, or silk is skillfully woven into delicate yarns by hand, using nothing more than a stick and a bowl.
Step 2
The spun yarns are immersed in a warm, soup infused with precisely the right ingredients to achieve the desired colours, left to bathe in this magical concoction for 48 hours.
Step 3
Once the yarns are beautifully coloured, preserving their brilliance becomes paramount. To ensure they withstand washing, they are placed in a pot with water and banana peels, left to simmer overnight.
Step 4
Now, with their colours firmly set, the yarns, now wash-proof, are gently hung to dry, a spectacle of vibrant threads dancing in the breeze.
Step 5
The true artistry begins as skilled hands employ the ancient technique known as tech pique, meticulously weaving the yarns into exquisite textiles. Each garment’s design determines the method used, adding a touch of artisanal charm to the process.
Step 6
Embracing a tale of wanderlust, these extraordinary pieces embark on a journey, destined for The Netherlands, where they eagerly await their new loving owner, ready to be cherished and admired.
Through these steps, behold the wonder of traditional craftsmanship and the natural beauty that adorns these kimonos, a testament to the timeless artistry of Guatemala.
